Specialised Occupational Therapy for Neurodivergent Clients

We Love Neurodiversity

At Staying Independent, we celebrate neurodiversity and the unique strengths it brings. The primary recognised neurodivergent NDIS disability we see is Autism, which is often accompanied by other conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, pathological demand avoidance (PDA), oppositional defiance disorder (ODD), intellectual disability, sensory processing disorder, dyspraxia, and speech or language delays. We have a thorougher understanding of these co-occurring conditions and recognise how they contribute to the individuality of each clients.

Our goal is not to change who our clients are but to understand how they see the world. By doing so, we empower them with the tools they need to adapt and thrive in their daily lives, building confidence, independence, and meaningful connections.

As Tony Attwood, a global leader in neurodivergent research, states: “The world needs all types of minds. Understanding and appreciating neurodivergence is essential for creating a truly inclusive society.”

Practical outcomes we see for our clients include:

  • Increased independence: Essential life skills such as making appointments, talking on the phone, cooking, managing finances, and organising daily routines to take greater control of everyday life.
  • Improved social engagement: Practical strategies for communication and social skills, enabling clients to form meaningful relationships, learn how to make a friend, and confidently navigate community settings.
  • Enhanced emotional regulation: Identifying underlying challenges—whether environmental, sensory sensitivities, or a lack of learned strategies—and creating solutions to anticipate and manage triggers. We teach clients that while they may not control the world around them, they can learn to navigate it effectively.
  • Interpreting body language: Recognising non-verbal cues and understanding what these signals communicate in different situations, which creates positive social interactions.
  • Stronger family dynamics: Clearer roles and responsibilities within families, particularly as clients transition into adulthood, which improves relationships and reduces stress.
  • Access to meaningful opportunities: Our clients are able to confidently pursue appropriate educational, employment, and recreational opportunities that align with their strengths and NDIS goals.
